History of Lufkin
The City of Lufkin was founded in 1882 and named for cotton merchant and Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad official Abraham P. Lufkin. In the 1890s, the city became a stop on the railroad. The timber industry, with surrounding pine forests, has been a major source of economic growth for the area.
The 20th century brought continued growth with the establishment of the Texas Foundries in 1945, which later became Lufkin Industries. The city is also known for its progressive approach to business development and quality of life improvements.
